Who this is for

If you've ever felt like you're
figuring it out alone — you're not.

Most guides focus on diagnosis. This one focuses on what comes next: building a real life. Whether your child is 5 or 20, it's not too late to start building intentionally.

Parents who just received a diagnosis and don't know where to start

Parents stuck in IEP meetings and therapy — missing the bigger picture

Parents of teenagers panicking about what happens after high school

Parents who want a framework, not just a list of resources

Parents who feel like they are the only thing standing between their child and a dependent adulthood

Parents who know their child is capable of more — and want a plan to get there

The framework

Four tracks. Every age.
One direction.

The Independence by Design framework organizes everything families need to work on into four parallel tracks — from age 5 through adulthood.

What's inside

More than a checklist.
A complete framework.

The Independence Roadmap covers four tracks at every life stage — so you always know what to work on, and what to plan for next.

Track 1

Daily Living

Hygiene, chores, cooking, time management — the skills your child needs to function independently, built year by year.

Track 2

Education & Advocacy

IEPs, 504 Plans, transition planning, self-advocacy — how to navigate school and transfer responsibility over time.

Track 3

Financial & Legal

ABLE Accounts, SSI, Special Needs Trusts, Medicaid Waivers — what to do, when to do it, and why it can't wait.

Track 4

Future Independence

Employment, housing, transportation, community — building a real adult life that belongs to your child, not you.

Bonus

School Advocacy Roadmap

Stage-by-stage guidance from Early Intervention through postsecondary, including your legal rights at each step.

Bonus

Resource Directory

Curated, categorized resources — ADHD, autism, disability, financial planning, benefits, and transition support.

About the author

A pediatrician.
Also a father.

I have spent my career helping families navigate childhood and adolescence. At home, our family has faced ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and chronic medical conditions — and all the questions that come with raising children who don't fit neatly into a box.

What I have learned — both professionally and personally — is that the families who achieve the best outcomes don't find independence. They build it. Intentionally, early, and across every area of life.

That is what this guide is about.
